Vodafone Germany: Cinema on demand – ‘Song fuer C’ by M+M is a whodunit that was specially developed for mobile phones
A father who is looking for his 18 year-old daughter, Clara hires a detective to help him out. The detective goes undercover to try and contact the daughter. She meets Tom, a musician who has fallen in love with Clara… The crime thriller gets the viewer – the mobile phone user – involved in a game of authentic messages, videoclips and clues, putting him in the role of ‘voyeur’. ‘Song fuer C’ is based on the very latest and specially developed technical applications for multifunctional mobile phones, DVB-H broadcasting and interaction. They by far surpass the current standards in mobile TV and were created in an interdisciplinary partnership involving the worlds of art, technology and academia.
The artists who developed ‘Song fuer C’, M+M (Marc Weis and Martin DeMattia), have produced a crime thriller that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction. Based on a script by Helmut Krausser, ‘Song fuer C’ stars Stephan Bissmeier, Anna Schudt, Christoph Luser, Britta Hammelstein and Barbara Rudnik and it was filmed with the assistance of new communication technologies.
‘Song fuer C’ is a pilot project that was initiated in an interdisciplinary partnership involving artists, technology experts and the University of Design and Art in Zurich (HGKZ). The Vodafone Group’s R&D team in Munich joined forces with the HGKZ to set up the Mobile Art Lab as an exclusive production platform for the artists. The HGKZ has been involved in mobile research for many years now and in 2001 it introduced a post-graduate Mobile Application Design programme.
From a technological research viewpoint, the artists define their requirements in a creative development process and are ‘early users’, which means they help to design future applications. ‘Song fuer C’ is based on the latest mobile communication systems, some of which are still in the development phase, including multifunctional mobile phones, DVB-H broadcasting and interaction, which pave the way for new mobile interactive media formats. The technology partners in the project are Siemens AG and BenQ Mobile. BenQ Mobile provided both the DVB-H mobile prototypes and the interactive basic application, HisTV. This forms the basis for novel developments in the field of mobile interactive TV. Siemens is providing the technical infrastructure for mobile TV broadcasting via the DVB-H standard. The Siemens Media Delivery Solution is being used for the project. It supports interactive mobile TV via DVB-H and UMTS.
‘Song fuer C’ will premiere at the Munich Film Festival on 21 July 2006, 8 p.m., Black Box, Gasteig.
