Latin America’s First UMTS Network is Constructed by Huawei

Huawei Technologies has been selected to construct Latin America’s first UMTS network by Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (“ANTEL”), the leading telecom operator in Uruguay.

This network is known as the first UMTS network in Latin America, this once again consolidate Huawei’s global leading position in UMTS and HSDPA infrastructure. After one year of testing, ANTEL purchases the UMTS equipments from Huawei. Huawei provides the HSDPA-based end-to-end UMTS solution for ANTEL.

Huawei’s end-to-end UMTS is a tailor-made solution for wireless networks. It enables not only high-quality wireless service provision but also additional value-added service, by comprising HSDPA-based series NodeB, compatible mobile Softswitch core network for GSM/GPRS/3GPP R99/3GPP R4, open intelligent network and mobile data platform, uniform network management solution and operating support system. Based on its self-designed ASIC chip, HUAWEI will provide a full-performance HSDPA solution, whose data rate can peak 14.4 Mbps in downlink.

As a global leading UMTS/HSDPA supplier, Huawei has secured 31 UMTS/HSDPA commercial contracts to date, and established partnership with global leading operators including Vodafone, TelefГіnica, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, Etisalat, KPN, etc. Huawei’s leading and innovative mobile Softswitch and new generation Node Bs serve many operators around the world and Huawei has accumulated abundant experience through the deployment of large-scale networks. Focusing on the requirements of customers, Huawei provides innovative and customer-oriented solutions to enhance long-term value and potential growth for customers.

Brasil: 3G-oriented GSM Network for Vivo

HUAWEI Technologies has been selected by the world-leading telecom operator TelefГіnica as the key provider for Vivo, the largest mobile telecommunications operator in the South Hemisphere, to construct a 3G-oriented GSM network. This signifies that the strategic collaboration between TelefГіnica and HUAWEI has been elevated to a new phase, and recognizes that HUAWEI’s innovative wireless solutions are able to meet strict requests of any high-end markets.

The TelefГіnica VIVO GSM project entails constructing the largest GSM network for 2006 in Latin America. According to the contract, HUAWEI will construct GSM networks for the most economically developed states along the coastline in Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, EspГrito Santo, ParanГЎ, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, which cover world-famous tourist cities such as Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of HUAWEI’s Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) will be deployed in the first phase of the contract.

The entire network constructed by HUAWEI will adopt its EnerG GSM solution featuring 2G/3G compatibility and new generation GSM stations, outfitted with equipment that is capable of smooth evolution to 3G. This way, HUAWEI helps the operator to maximize their value and profit by lowering long-term network construction costs and network life-cycle operational & maintenance expenditure.

“The VIVO GSM project is one of the largest mobile projects of TelefГіnica in recent years. For us, the compatibility with 3G services is very important to assure its future upgrade to WCDMA/UMTS in a cost-effective way. TelefГіnica is very happy to further develop its relationship with HUAWEI in Latin America,” commented Mr. Cesar Alierta, Chairman of TelefГіnica.

“Thanks for TelefГіnica and Vivo’s trust on HUAWEI, and we are delighted to have become TelefГіnica’s key partner in wireless area and meanwhile,” said Ms. Sun Yafang, Chairwoman of HUAWEI, “As the world’s leading multinational telecom operator, TelefГіnica is very strict in selecting suppliers in terms of comprehensive ability. HUAWEI’s leading solutions and quick-response and quality services will help VIVO to maintain its leading position in the market, and will bring its customers with more novel services and more abundant experiences.”

As the world’s fastest-growing mainstream operator, HUAWEI GSM solution has served 120 million subscribers. In the mean time, HUAWEI has won over 30 WCDMA/HSDPA commercial contracts worldwide. The cooperation with TelefГіnica and Vivo further consolidates HUAWEI’s leading position in the Brazilian and Latin American markets.

China Mobile expands Huawei contract

The rapidly expanding Huawei has won a contract with China Mobile to expand its GSM contract to provide mobile softswitch with a 30 million subscriber-capacity and more than 30 thousand TRXs in the second half of this year.

In a statement, China Mobile said it selected Huawei over numerous competitors because of “its strength in providing advanced technologies”.

The pair cooperated previously on the world’s first 3GPP R4 mobile softswitch network.

According to the contract, Huawei will provide the EnerG GSM solution designed by 3G technology to help China Mobile maximize its profits by lowering network construction costs. The company will also provide its new generation GSM dual density BTS which, it claims, can increase coverage by 20 per cent while saving 20 per cent in power consumption.
