T-Mobile outlaws VoIP over 3G

T-Mobile UK has banned Voice over IP (VoIP) usage on its 3G network, threatening to terminate any users found using the technology.

The warning comes in the small print of the recently launched Web ‘n’ Walk Professional tariff, targeted at business customers and high data users.

“Use of Voice over Internet Protocol and Messaging over Internet Protocol is prohibited by T-Mobile. If use of either or both of these services is detected T-Mobile may terminate all contracts with the customer and disconnect any SIM cards and/or web ‘n’ walk cards from the T-Mobile network,” the company said.

On a 12 month contract, the Web ‘n’ walk Professional tariff delivers a 3G UMTS and wifi capable data card for a one off fee of ВЈ58.75, plus ВЈ19.99 per month. On an 18 month contract, the ВЈ58.75 fee for the card is waived, while the pricing also includes a 12 month pass to T-Mobile’s wifi hotspot service.

The data card itself is HSDPA capable, so when the operator launches the super fast 3G service, users will automatically benefit from a speed boost.

T-Mobile also has a “fair usage” policy operating on the tariff, allowing users to send and receive up to 2GB of data per month.

“T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed this volume of data in two (or more) consecutive months in any six month period to ask them to reduce their usage. If usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied which will result in a reduced speed of transmission,” the company said.
