Sony Ericsson Concentrates on Mobile Phones
Sony Ericsson sold the assets of its M2M Communications Business Unit for nearly $40 million to Wavecom. The agreement does not cover assets relating to Sony Ericsson’s mobile phone business, which Sony Ericsson will continue to own and operate.
Once under Wavecom’s wing, the company plans to harness Wavecom’s software experience with Sony Ericsson’s hardware platform. Specifically, Wavecom plans to integrate Sony Ericsson’s M2Mpower software suite into its Open AT software suite.
Wavecom also expects to take advantage of Sony Ericsson’s market presence.
The purchase, according to Wavecom, includes the GX64 GSM/GPRS product family, the GX47/48 GSM/GPRS product family, the CM42/52 CDMA/1xRTT product family, as well as Sony Ericsson’s global assets and activities in M2M research and development, marketing and sales.
Wavecom did not snap up any assets or activities related to Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones, accessories or PC card business, the companies said.
The 90 or so employees from Sony’s M2M unit are expected to join Wavecom. The deal is on tap for completion before the end of this month, according to the companies.
