Softbank plans to spend big bucks on 3G

Japanese service provider Softbank, which is currently undergoing the ВЈ9bn acquisition of Vodafone Japan, plans to spend a further Y250bn (ВЈ1.2bn) on mobile infrastructure this year.

Reports in Japanese press today reveal that Softbank intends to increase the number of 3G base stations within its network infrastructure from 20,000 to 30,000, in a bid to increase migration of subscribers to more lucrative 3G services.

In terms of attractive applications, the service provider is also partnering with Yahoo Japan to deliver services. And although the Vodafone brand will eventually disappear, Vodafone intends to maintain an involvement in the Japanese market through the formation of a relationship with SoftBank involving participation in the supply and distribution of data and content.

Softbank also plans to begin selling Microsoft Windows Mobile devices later this year, which will allow for the introduction of services such as mobile email.
