Orange and Sony Ericsson Raise The Curtain on GLASTONBURY THE FILM
Glastonbury The Film is on its way to a cinema near you, thanks to Orange and Sony Ericsson.
The film, the first to provide a unique insight into the ultimate’ live music festival, will be launched in key towns across the UK in April, supported by live acoustic sets.
Since the first Glastonbury Festival was held four decades ago in 1970, this semi-annual event has grown into the UK’s biggest music going extravaganza, frequented by some of the biggest bands in the world.
The film examines how lifestyles have changed rapidly over the last 35 years, seen through the prism of the Glastonbury Festival. In addition to the archive footage of the festival’s ever changing guises, there will also be previously unseen TV, news and music performance footage.
Film Director, Julien Temple spent three years collecting footage from every single year of the Festival, with over 900 hours of footage submitted. Interweaving images of dance acts, sceptical locals, and stirring performances by music legends, not to mention the unbridled energy of each successive generation of music fans, Glastonbury skilfully chronicles the evolution of the longest-running music festival in the world.
Musicians featured include an array – from The Velvet Underground, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Primal Scream, Alabama 3, Billy Bragg, Cypress Hill, The Scissor Sisters, Radiohead and Babyshambles to The Levellers, David Gray, Bjork, Coldplay, Chemical Brothers, Stereo MC’s, Blur and Morrissey, amongst many others.
Film premieres will take place at four separate locations across the country, starting in London on April 11th, followed by Bristol (13th), Leeds (14th) and Glasgow (15th). Each venue is expected to lay host to an array of celebrity appearances, from Glastonbury stars old and new, as well as live acoustic performances in each region from some of the biggest names in music.
The nation will have the chance to join the tour, see the live acoustic sets and the premiere of Glastonbury The Film by simply texting* “Glasfilm” and the shortened name of the town to 82500. E.g. “Glasfilm-Lond” (live from March 1st). Full details below.
The Glastonbury film project began in 2002 when the future of the festival was in question. Michael Eavis wanted a record of the Festival’s history in case it turned out to be the final year. With less than a month before the 2002 festival there was no time to lose.
Michael Eavis, Founder of the Glastonbury Festival said: “I think he’s done a brilliant job. It’s very bold, very brave, and will raise some eyebrows “
Director of the Glastonbury Film, Julien Temple, said: “What has been fascinating, and rewarding, has been making a film from the point of view of the audience, and it is great that we had so many different sources of material, much of it very personal. Hopefully you get the sense of surviving this event rather than being guided through by some narrator.”
The tour forms part of Orange and Sony Ericsson’s wider campaign to promote music and entertainment within the family of Walkman® phones, including the forthcoming W810i available on Orange.
