NEC, Matsushita and TI in 3G talks

Japanese manufacturers Matsushita and NEC are reportedly in talks with US chip firm Texas Instruments over the potential creation of a joint venture 3G chip manufacturer.

The firms are planning to set up the new venture in Japan as early as this summer, with the intention of developing chips for 3G phones made by Matsushita, under the Panasonic brand, and NEC.

The joint venture would also export parts to other phone producers outside of Japan.

It is thought NEC and Matsushita subsidiary Panasonic Mobile Communications (PMC) will each hold about 30 per cent in the venture, with the rest split equally between Matsushita, Texas Instruments and NEC’s semiconductor unit NEC Electronics.
