Motorola and Sony launch iRadio

If ever there was a doubt about music making it on the mobile, a deal announced on Wednesday between Motorola and Sony Music, will surely silence the naysayers.

The pair have teamed up to provide Motorola iRadio users with exclusive content that has been commercially licensed content from Sony BMG’s catalog for use on iRadio.

iRadio will be showcased during this week’s CTIA Wireless 2006 conference in Las Vegas.

iRadio listeners will be able to access any music from Sony BMG, including up-and-coming bands, current chart-toppers and timeless classics. In addition, Sony BMG will distribute original radio programming that will debut exclusively on iRadio.

The Sony BMG label includes acts like Dido, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.

Motorola iRadio will come with access to 435 advert-free channels of music and talk which will allow listeners to download items using Bluetooth.

Listeners can also create their own iRadio “Wish List” by instantly tagging an individual song or artist.

“The artists on Sony BMG’s labels are nominated for a staggering 125 Grammies this year,” said Mike Gaumond, Motorola vice president and general manager, Digital Media Services. He added: “The sheer diversity of the Sony BMG roster, coupled with the Motorola iRadio service, will give listeners access to a massive assortment of contemporary music and time-tested masters.”
