Apple iFone almost ready?
The rumour mill is grinding again and the internet is abuzz with speculation that the unveiling of Apple’s long awaited iPod phone, or iFone, is imminent.
What we know is that Apple has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday September 12 in London, with similar events presumably taking place around the world. The topic of the event is unknown but coincidentally, September 12 is the same day that the CTIA Wireless & Entertainment 2006 exhibition kicks off in Los Angeles.
US analyst firm American Technology Research (ATR) has thrown plenty of fuel on the fire in the past few days and if analyst Shaw Wu is correct, Apple has finalised product design for the device and brought it through to prototype stage.
In launching the device, Apple could take one of two roads to market. The company could pursue an MVNO agreement with a wireless carrier and introduce the phone with an assortment of branded services, or it sell the device direct to consumers, either independently or in conjunction with operators.
ATP also believes that Apple has enough clout to steal a one per cent share of the 1 billion unit global handset market, equivalent to $2bn (ВЈ1bn).

I wrote this to one of our sales people in NYC last week. It bears repeating.
Is it good news for us?….If I guess right it is. How much do you want to bet it is an unlocked GSM (SIM card) phone and utilizes off deck for delivery. I can’t see Apple wanting to share its market domination with the likes of a carrier and their backward ways, especially here in North America. Apple is a pioneer and a successful one. Apple already has the mobile music industry in a lock and everyone scrambling to figure out how to catch them.
Mobile phone music is struggling because of cost, poor equipment and the fact that every damn carrier is intent on making it WAY too hard and WAY too expensive. Apple builds its own phone, Ipod quality music, down loadable on the fly, off deck delivery so they continue to control their customers, completely synced to your PC when you get home AND unlocked for GSM networks from a voice and data stand-point. Just pic up a SIM card from the likes of Cingular, T-mobile, Rogers or who ever world wide and pop it in and you’re good to go. No fuss, no muss. Because it is off deck, anyone with a browser equipped phone on any network can access it.
Why is this good for us? Education. The NA market still looks at carriers and their content as the only way to fly. They know no different. The idea of a unlocked phone is so foreign that it is like speaking a African tribal language. Unlocked, off deck by a huge player like Apple legitimizes the off deck market instantly and opens the door very wide for the likes of i-mate and our custom phone company partner in China. Much like the advent of the Netscape Browser…followed closely by IE, broke the whole web open for millions of people stuck on AOL and CompuServe; this has the same potential. The idea of selling this independantly shouldn’t bother Apple. They started Ipod from scratch and everyone found it and bought. Use the same sales network already established and ride the current wave. Why share it with a carrier and limit your exposure?
This could be a pivotal point for North American mobile. Lets see if they are as smart as I think they are.

An iPhone can function as a video camera (video recording was not a standard feature until the iPhone 3GS was released), a camera phone, can send texts and receive visual voicemail, a portable media player, and an Internet client with e-mail and web browsing capabilities, and both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The user interface is built around the device’s multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one.
